There is PROOF!

Finally, I found a picture of Greg Laden, PZ Myers and myself talking smart about evolution. The theme at the con was "Steampunk," so of course goggles were de rigueur.

Whew, that was crazy!

Back from CONvergence. Had what I think was an entertaining panel discussion with PZ Myers, Greg Laden and a standing-room only crowd. Thanks to the Skepchicks for organizing.

I was left thinking about why skepticism and sci-fi/fantasy events often co-occur. I think it's because imagination is fun. And important. It's not "reality," but it's still fun.

So what are YOU doing this weekend?

I'm going to be participating at CONvergence - a science fiction and fantasy with associated skeptic/science panels. This is my first generic Science Fiction type convention. I've done Star Trek once. GSA is really like a giant geology convention. This will be interesting.

Since I'm apparently the type who can't do anything halfway, I'm going to be talking on three panels. The first will be thursday at 3:30 where I get to hang out with a bunch of authors (including the always metasomatic Kelly McCullough) and pretend I know something about literature and fantasy maps. Friday morning I get to do a bunch of Magnet demos with Matt Lowry (from Skeptical Teacher). And then, if that weren't enough, I'm on a panel with PZ Myers and Greg Laden, talking about evolution.

I'm not sure exactly how I managed to land on that last panel. I feel like I'm far too mild mannered a rookie to share panel space with Paul and Greg. At least that's my reaction right now.

I think this quote by Kelly McCullough sums up the general state of pre-planning involved: "I'm bringing caffeine, alcohol, and pants. The rest isn't really planned."

Convergence!

I'm headed to CONvergence in the Twin Cities (of MN) this summer. I'll be on a few panels - and I'll put together some corresponding blog posts as well. One of the panels is going to be very interesting - I'm sitting with PZ Meyers and Greg Laden to talk about evolution. I assume there will be others on the panel, but I don't know who will be there yet.

The theme for the CON this year is "steampunk." At least, more steampunky than previous years. So PZ, Greg and I were tweeting about what to wear. Goggles and Top Hats seem to be the consensus. Although I'm leaning towards Pith Helmet and Monocle.
